Ice Follies 2025

February 7th - 21st, 2025

THEME: OZHAASHIKWAA (THE ICE IS SLIPPERY)

There is slippery ice; extra care and consideration is needed. Travelling and moving forward is difficult; the conditions are unsteady. The terrain ahead demands resilience and adaptability as the path forward remains uncertain.

David Chops, A Spectrum of Interconnected Cooperation, 2025

Presented by White Water Gallery

A Spectrum of Interconnected Cooperation is a large site-specific installation for Ice Follies 2025 that explores the interconnectedness of all things in nature and the consequences of humanity’s competitive, extractive systems. The installation consists of two 11-foot trees, painted white fading to blue, surrounded by various-sized white and black cubes. The cubes, ranging from 3′ square to 1′ square, provide seating and places for reflection. A black rope connects the trees, with fairy lights illuminating it at night, while the trees themselves are lit with LED floodlights. The surrounding black cubes conceal floodlights that illuminate the space, creating a striking contrast with the snow-covered lake. The installation invites viewers to engage by taking a ribbon from a nearby podium and adding it to the rope, symbolizing their connection to the art and the collective human experience. The ribbons, in all colors of the rainbow, represent the full spectrum of light and life, celebrating the diverse ways people love and connect with one another. The installation aims to create an immersive, participatory experience that encourages reflection on humanity’s role in the world and the importance of cooperation in addressing the ongoing climate crisis.
