Ice Follies 2012
February 18th - March 10th, 2012

THEME: ANAAMIMIKOM (UNDER THE SURFACE)

Under the Surface was chosen because it represents the efforts behind the scenes to make Ice Follies 2012 more community-oriented and engaging. With artists travelling from across the country to work alongside of local artists, community members, and coordinators we hope to present a unique arts experience on Lake Nipissing that everyone can enjoy.

Peter Hargraves, ICE FOLLIE, 2012

Peter Hargraves and his team at ‘Sputnik Architecture’ have teamed up with artists before for ice exhibits, helping to create Winnipeg’s annual Warming Huts event at that city’s waterfront known as the Forks. In 2012 Sputnik was Invited to venture east to North Bay, Ontario to take part in their biennial festival of contemporary and community engaged art on frozen lake Nipissing. Their approach was simple, put the budget toward readily accessible building materials, and go to work. the result is a windbreak, angled to look like a stick coming out of the ice to anyone approaching from the shore, only to find as they walk closer that it has a coffee bar and a bench for comfort. The space between the slats look like individual panoramas of the horizon and distant ice huts.

Artist Bio:

Peter Hargraves leads the team at Sputnik Architecture. He brings with him a wealth of experience which has been gained over 20 years working in several large North American centres including Portland, Toronto, Montreal, and for the past eight years here in Winnipeg. He has completed projects that vary from health care and education facilities, to housing and community services. In 2009 Peter established Sputnik Architecture Inc. Under his direction the firm has developed a solid reputation for creativity, hard work, and dedication to client satisfaction. Peter is active in both the architectural and civic community. Peter tries to live his life in a manner that demonstrates the potential of living sustainably. As a resident of Osborne Village, a coach at local soccer programs, work with the Warming Huts project, and volunteer board member for the Rosamunde Music Academy, Peter is a proponent of giving back to the community around him.
